How to pass DELE A2: a step-by-step study plan
To pass DELE A2, you need at least 30 points out of 50 in Group 1 (reading + writing) and Group 2 (listening + speaking). The best method is to practise all four tests in the same format and correct your written and spoken work, because these are the parts where you have to produce answers rather than simply choose an option.
Start with the scoring rule
Each test is worth 25 points, and there are two groups: reading + writing, and listening + speaking. You need 30 out of 50 in each group, which is 60% of the points in each one. A high score in one group does not make up for a low score in the other. This is why your preparation must be balanced.
Four-week plan
- Week 1: assessment. Complete one test of each type within the official time limit and note what goes wrong in each one (vocabulary, speed, grammar, nerves).
- Week 2: comprehension. Practise reading and listening several times a week. After each test, read the transcript and the answers, and understand every mistake.
- Week 3: writing. Write a note or email every day, using the required number of words, and ask someone to correct it. Rewrite the text with the corrections. Make a note of your repeated mistakes.
- Week 4: speaking and review. Practise the three tasks aloud, with 12 minutes of preparation and a timer. Finish with a mock reading test (60 minutes) and a mock listening test (40 minutes) in the official format, as well as writing and speaking tasks.
Mistakes that cost the most points
- Not covering every point in the prompt in the writing or speaking test.
- Not using the required number of words (60-70 and 70-80 words in the writing test).
- Leaving questions blank in the reading or listening test: there is no penalty for wrong answers.
- Spending too much time on one task and not reaching the last one.
- Not practising aloud: on the day of the exam, you will speak to real examiners.
On the day of the exam
- Bring two original identity documents and your registration receipt. In Spain, for DELE A2, Instituto Cervantes requires your TIE and passport; people from the European Union must present two documents from a list published by Instituto Cervantes. According to its frequently asked questions, the documents may be expired.
- During preparation for the speaking test, write down keywords for the three tasks.
- The comprehension tests are answered on a separate answer sheet: transfer your answers carefully.
Frequently asked questions
How much do I need to study for DELE A2?
It depends on your starting point. A four-week plan that includes practice for all four tests and correction of your written work is a reasonable foundation if you already have a basic level of Spanish.
Which part of DELE A2 is the most difficult?
It depends on the person. In the production parts (writing and speaking), you have to produce your own text and are assessed by examiners, so it is a good idea to practise them and have your work corrected.
How can I practise speaking if I study alone?
Prepare each task with a timer, speak aloud, record your answer, and compare it with a model answer. With A2 Nacionalidad, you can also record your answer and receive a transcript, corrections, and comments on how clearly your voice can be understood.
